Chronology
- 2007
Started studying philosophy
I began studying philosophy in 2007. I later graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a BA in Philosophy and Legal Studies in May 2009.
That is the starting point of this chronology, before actuarial science or machine learning entered the picture. Philosophy remains among my interests; Socrates, Descartes, Hume, Nietzsche, and Wittgenstein are among my favorite philosophers.
- 2013
Started studying actuarial science
I started studying actuarial science in 2013. In May 2014, I completed a Master of Public Affairs at Indiana University Bloomington, with majors in Public Finance, Public Management, and Public Policy.
I joined National General as a Pricing Analyst in December 2014. There, I worked on personal auto pricing, rate revisions, regulatory filings, and portfolio monitoring. It was applied quantitative work with decisions that had to make sense in both a model and an insurance business.

- 2018
Returned to actuarial science
I returned to actuarial science in 2018 and joined Farmers Insurance as a Senior Actuarial Analyst that September. I owned pricing analysis for home insurance business, including indications, filings, and rate testing.
I also redesigned the quarterly indication process for greater speed and reliability and served as the rate-testing lead. Alongside the analysis itself, this work involved making recurring processes more dependable.
- 2019
FCAS, and a turn toward machine learning
I became a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society in October 2019. I passed every actuarial exam on the first attempt and completed the sequence in 3.5 years of active study. That same year, I began studying machine learning and joined Root Insurance as a Data Scientist.
At Root, my work included predictive pricing research and a claims-fraud model deployed on AWS with production monitoring. Independent projects followed in computer vision, topic modeling, and word embeddings. My move into AI combined sustained study with work on concrete modeling problems.
- 2022
NLP, generative AI, and ChatGPT
In 2022, I began working with generative AI, NLP, and ChatGPT. I joined Grange Insurance that August, and my work there has since included retrieval-based assistants, language-model adaptation, classification, and production workflows.
I also helped establish NLP and generative AI capabilities in a department that had no prior projects in the area. That meant creating training materials, reusable code, and development guidelines, alongside workshops and conversations with business teams. The work has included both building applications and helping colleagues understand and apply the methods.
